There are qualities in Dr. Schlosserg's work that I find inspirational: Intelligence, humor, wonderful sense of the absurd. Dr. Nancy is willing to put herself out there in ways that makes learning and reflection possible and helps the he difficult go down more easily. And of course empowerment is what her work is all about.

Transcending stereotypes? that seems to be an important piece of getting over any of the isms. At one time or another, I have been all those things. I'm going to think about assumptions about aging and others as well. Will get back

Institute for the ages? YES!

"Dr. Nancy Schlossberg educates, entertains and energizes her audience. She combines her keen intellect and insights on retirement with down to earth real life stories to which any woman or man can easily identify. She enables her audience to recognize and understand that retirement is another beginning and not the end of life's journey."

Recently, Senior Editor Heather Dunhill of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune wrote after my speech to the Guardian Fund, "She channeled a bit of Carol Burnett as she provided tips for living". That really tickled me. I like to makes speeches that include humor and substance. Thank you for the compliment Heather.

Nancy Schlossberg's workshop Taking the Mystery Out of Change was both enlightening and entertaining. The audience attending for our national conference in Los Angeles appreciated her witty delivery as well as her comprehensive transition model.

John W. Powell, Jr. '77, Lieutenant Colonel, USMCR (Retired), Director of Admissions:
Re: Transition Theory

Dr. Schlossberg,

Thank you for your quick reply to my request for information about “transition theory”. Your attached summary & blog will be a big assist in preparing our presentation. It is a pleasure to be able to communicate directly with one of the theorists that we are studying.

In reflection I now realize that I have been unknowingly exposed to your model on several occasions. Having served in the military for a number of years I have experienced my share of transitions with events, both unexpected and anticipated, as well as numerous non-events. Looking back, I can see that somewhere along the line some of those responsible for assisting in these evolutions had some training or education in many of the steps you present. Although not actually labeled as such, I can recall the use of the 4 S's (situation, self, support & strategy). There was a even a direct use of the phrase "moving in, moving through, and moving on" in relation to dealing with transition. The counselor
actually used a military analogy in his explanation: moving in = locating the enemy; moving through = attacking through the objective; and moving on = consolidating victory.

In our class discussions, we have yet to discover a situation in which your theory & model will not apply. Just this week I found using the model instrumental in counseling a staff member that is dealing with a number of issues. Using the model, I was able to assist him as he determined his situation, the decisions he faced, and the support & strategies available, which led to decisions on a course of action.

I thank you for the clarity and simplicity in the understanding of your concepts and for taking the time to respond.
